case studies

Here are some case studies to show how I work.

This rose is an example of how I can put together a detailed model for a game.

Below are the steps I took to build this model.

I needed to create a 3D rose for my game Ex Libris. The 3D rose was intended to represent the tale of Beauty and the Beast in the game.

  1. I searched for “Beauty and the Beast Rose” in Google image search. This was so I could look to see what type of rose I would be dealing with.
  2. I looked for more detailed rose images to help me build a familiarity with the construction of the rose.
  3. I looked at other models that other people had made.
  4. I noticed that the rose had a number of layered petals, each of them different to the next. Also I noticed that the layers wrapped around the other petal layers.
  5. I began construction on the rose, focusing on making each layer one single layer rather than many individual layers. Then making a texture that represented a flower and were appropriate for the rose.
  6. Finally I brought the rose into the game world.

The house in Ex Libris was particularly interesting as this model had to be detailed enough create an atmosphere all of its own.

Below are the steps I took to build this model.

  1. I found a similar model on a commercially available game in this case it was Fallout 3 Point Lookout Downloadable content. This was my inspiration for the manor house.
  2. I hand drew a picture that was inspired by the Fallout 3 manor house with various styles included in the one drawing.
  3. A model was created based on the drawing. However I felt that it still looked too neat.
  4. The house was crumpled in order to give a more dilapidated look … this seemed to solve the problem of the house looking too orderly.
  5. I brought the house into the game world.
