Response to readings.

Folded Space: How Computer Games Rework Our Ideas of the Maze.

This article interested me because of its comparison of old fashioned hedge mazes to Pac-man. this has also got me thinking of how I would go about “restricting movement, yet making the space appear larger” for this assignment and future video game assignments.

Technologies of Location: Affect of Place in Artistic Uses of Mobile and Social Networks

In this article i realised how under utilised our urban environment and what potential they have. An example of this is when Tapio Mäkelä talks about the GPS Drawing Project that is a amazing idea. Another thing that struck me is making a GPS game is not just about the game-play and scenario it s also a social experience.

Mapping and Psychogeography

I found this aricle spoke very clearly that maping and navigation were just as important as game-play and scenario. also i found that the way that not many people used the media function on the phones.

Testing.

I just tested my patch in the stairwell. I have one problem the speakers  have don’t have a high enough frequency this means that you cant here the full effect of the sound.

I am going to see what i can do about this today and tomorrow and do the documentation on Friday hopefully.


Statement and Progress.

Statement  

What i wanted to do is to have a auditory trace on the people walking through a stair case. the way i wanted to do this is by having a microphone playback an artificial echo of the sound with in a stairwell. this would transform a stair well in to interactive experience. This would encourage people to the stairs and not the elevator. 

Progress

Now i have stated making my patch I have got to the point where i have got a echo working but the echo last only for couple of seconds before the echo sound strange. This is kind of frustrating   when i want it to last at least a minute.

Also the patch looks a too simple because of this i am in the process of thinking about how i could expand on this idea of auditory trace.

Heres the ideas i have had so far on expatiation of this idea.

  •   Have two microphones on 2 stairwells But the microphones would not be analyzing the other stairwell. So the person would here someone else using the other stair well.
  • Having the stair well trigger other prerecorded steps on other staiwells.

For the rest of the weekend i will analyze the stairwell and work on the patch.


My Plan for Project 2

Ok had a talk to my lecturer today and helped me form a plan.

Friday – Monday : create a MAX/MSP sound patch.

Monday – Wednesday : Electronics.
