DMDN 305 Real-Time Interactive

Documentation project 2 305

Reflections:

This assignment has been a interesting project as I learned a lot. I learned the basics of how to use arduino, I now feel a lot more comfortable using it as a tool. This project also pushed my Max/Msp knowledge.

Conceptually this project has been challenging with my initial idea being too complected to implement. At this point I had to rethink some things and take a new approach to my assignment.

Overall this assignment has made me realize the elaborate nature of VJ. Also the project has made me appreciate VJ more.

Here is the video of my documentation.

Documnetaion in the pipeline.

Today I filmed my VJ  Device  in Operation for the documentation. I will have this up by the end of tomorrow

Image My Final Max Patch

Sucess and Fine tuning

Today I have  a break through i have been trying to make a video switch funtion in Max/msp and today I finaly did it.

This what still have to do by 3 tomorrow.

  • Edit footage together.
  • Fix Max Patch – video switching.
  • Fix soldering – to help improving signal.
  • Find Sounds.
  • Buy Hobby box for wiring.
  • re-export all movies.

will put more pictures tomorrow.

Tests

I forgot to put up some images and a video of my tests with the controler and the arduino.

A list of things to do for 305.

  • Edit footage together.
  • Fix Max Patch – video switching.
  • Fix soldering – to help improving signal.
  • Find Sounds.
  • Buy Hobby box for wiring.

A change in idea and other stuff.

After talking to my tutor I have changed my idea so my idea right now is looking at an interactive retro video game timeline. Where you can cut together various video game footage. There will be too ways of choosing

    footage.

The Buttons will have 2 buttons where you can select footage in a linear fashion and 2 other buttons operate a random chances of getting another clip.

Also I could not find a joystick so i ended up buying a game pad from the Nintendo NES period. I am currently reverse engineering the game pad which I am got to finish tomorrow. I also paln to get some game footage tomorrow.

Also I did a arduino test today and which was a success.

    More to come tomorrow

    Project02 update…

I have not blogged much for this subject for a while. So here is a update

    Here is my concept presentation

However I am rethinking  what my visuals are will be but i hope to have the the visual done by the end of this week and the controller done by the Thursday the next week.

    Ideas for 305.

Over the last couple of days i have been thinking about what I can do for project 2.

One idea i had was to have two game controllers that have are cutting together a piece of war footage and depending on who did the most cutting that would be the winner.

Generally  I want a vj device that the audience them selves are the editors.

    Documentation

    Description

The purpose of this assignment was to retell a story from “The Wellington City and Sea Museum” with in the last century.

I chose the year 1982 the year in which Wellington became nuclear free city. The way in which i chose to retell the story was by having a interactive slide show which would be be able to be manipulated by a an atom molecule model.

The interactive slide show has images that tell the story of by showing pictures from the time. Also the slide show will look like a retro television set.

And reflect the cause (the nuclear powered USS Truxton) and effect (the protesters) of this issue.

    How it works

By picking up the atom and moving it around the atom in turn this changes the image on screen. There are two different outcomes when playing with this composition. Either you get images of the USS Truxton or get the images of the protesters. When the atom is not being played with the composition will revert to a television static.

    Reflections

Reflecting back to the start of this assignment i my idea has evolved since the start. But to talk about my assessment as a whole would make this blog post hard to understand. So I have broken my assignment into three categories.

    Electronics

This part of the assignment was fairly easy but very quite time consuming. Also I found electronics to be quite fun and interesting.

    Interface

Originally i waned to look at making the interface out of Perspex but i found out is very tricky to use and cumbersome. From there i used wood which was alot easer to use. also I fond out that collecting materials is allot harder to find.

    Quartz Composition

After some studying up on this program i found Quartz to not be as complex as MAX/MSP. However I found it to be allot harder to find help on the internet. also finding photos was actually easer than i originally thought .

    Demo – videos

Over the last couple of days i have been working on gettiing a fully working model.

    so here is a video…

And here is my 2D animation demo video….

    Documentation coming very soon.

    checking off the list.

Ok in order to understand where i am with my assignment.

I have to break it down into sections.

    Electronics

Almost done. The mercury switches are in place and working .On Friday i will put a vibrating motor on the mouse.

    Interface

In reality this part is linked with electronics. If all goes to plan i will get all the materials on Friday and start AND finish by the end of the weekend. minus the atom model which i am ordering in from http://www.deltaed.co.nz/

    Quartz Composition

Very close to completion all need is the digital reproductions of the photos from the Alexander Turnbull library.

Planing and some good news and bad.

Yesterday I went to the Alexander Tunbull Library(A.T.L.) and looked up some photos on the anti nuclear issue.

There is is good and bad news. Good news is that there are lots of great Images Bad news is that each image costs $19.50.

I will discuss this issue on Monday with my lecturer

Also I have have had some problems starting with this assignment so with this in mind here’s the plan for this week.

Sun-buying a new mouse and switches and other materials

    Mon-work on quartz composition

Tue- Get photos from (A.T.L.) and Start experimenting.

    Concept .

Here is the concept in pdf form.

    Progress on Project one

    Ok progress so far….

I bought a mouse yesterday unfortunately its a ps/2 connection not usb.

however i have bought a USB conveter plug on trade me. hopefuly i will have the plug in 2-3 days.

I plan to go to the film archive on Friday and see what they have in regards to for anti-nuclear video fottage.

As for my quartz composition I am still learning up on the program.

I hope that by the end of the weekend I will have rough composition working and some idea on how build my interface device.
